Beautifully photographed, mostly in color, all appropriately gritty, with sweaty, slightly greasy, stubbled faces and hands and all. This book will, for sure, make you feel like you underpaid for your ax. An ax is so basic, has been around since the stone age. Gränsfors Bruk makes the best, and this book will make you glad you own one. Thankfully, Junket Is Nice remains in print thanks to the never-say-die folks at The New York Review Children’s Collection.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003eDorothy “Pat the Bunny” Kunhardt wrote it in the early ‘30s, at the onset of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. I won’t ruin it for you, but I can tell you, without ruining it, that it’s a short story, for kids maybe 1 to 90, about a strange old guy who loves his pudding-like junket so much that he seems to eat nothing else. Naturally, this concerns the locals, and the story takes off from there. It has a good ending.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003eThere are no page numbers; there is dialog without quotation marks; there is only one comma in the whole book. It’s hand-written, and all of the great illustrations are in black and white and red, maybe the plan all along, or maybe a cost-cutting measure, but it works.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003eI came across this book about eight years ago, and vaguely remembered it. It’s memorable. But I must have read it as a library book, because it wasn’t a family classic. It should be a family classic. Will he herd cattle in the Lowlands, or stalk stags in the Highlands? You’ll have to read it to find out. That’s the catch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s every bit as good as Ferdinand, and has the same look and vibe. Sincere, friendly, interesting story, and the illustrations are the kind that AI will never be able to duplicate. The book is physically gorgeous, a green-and-red thin hardback—a good size, now that you mention it, for hooking a metric metal ruler over and jamming up tight while somebody helps you measure your PBH. The endpapers are red-and-white\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a Caldecott Honor book. Written in 1938, at a time when it wasn’t important for children’s books to have page numbers, but it’s 13mm thick total, with 8mm of pages. This is one of my favorite children’s stories. I have lots of them. Following dictators, believing rubbish, behaving contrary to who they are and how they comport themselves in their daily lives. This is an easy, fascinating, graphic version of a much bigger book, same name, that you may not have time to read. This one will take you one and a half to two hours to read. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIllustrated by Nora Krug, another professor and pro illustrator and author of another book on Ukrain and Russia. On Tyranny is an important book.
