Shimano doesn't want you to start off on a cheap bike, not knowing how to shift, and hate its cheap derailer, so they make sure they work as well as their expensive ones. Front and rears. Nobody here has an XTR derailer, for instance. Several of us ride the humble Altus. Mostly, though, we pick something Deore-like and just make sure it works with the rest of the drive train. I like it because the pulleys are huge (13t for the top one, 15t for the bottom one, compared to 11\/11 on a normal rear derailer). This means they take up more chainslack and don't need as long a cage. The bigger pulleys turn easier, too. I don't care about that, but I find it interesting that Campagnolo retrofits giant pulleys on its derailers for pro riders sometimes, to reduce turning friction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe thing I really like is that Shimano introduced this big-pulley design near the low-end of its range, probably because they felt it was too risky to introduce on their elite models, figuring the low-brows wouldn't be as tradition-bound. So there it is: Shimano's best design in a cheap derailer. There are now becoming some other Altus variants. The groovy one is the M310.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIndexes 7 or 8 speed, frictions up to 9.\u003cbr\u003eWraps 43 teeth*.\u003cbr\u003eMax rear cog, 34t\u003cbr\u003eWt: 318g\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003e* What's \"wrap\"?\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt’s the difference in big and small chainring teeth PLUS the diff btw big and small cassette teeth. For instance:\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eBig chainring 46. Small 24. That diff is 22.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eBig cassette tooth 32, small 11, that’s 21t\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e22t + 21t = 43t. That's what the Altus can handle.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eLet's say you're bumming out because your big and small rings are 46 and 24, but your cassette is 11 x 36. You technically need 22 + 25...47t. And on top of all that, the Altus is rated to 34t maximum, so you're double-screwed out of it. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBut wait! In friction mode, any Shimano rear derailer will go at least 2t more than the rating, so the 36 should be (and in our experience is) no problem.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd you aren't supposed to ride the small chainring x small rear cog combo, anyway. If you can limit your small chainring to a 15t or larger rear cog (36 - 15 +21), then you're back in clover. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThere's no blatant danger by riding a smaller rear cog than that. The chain sags, but nothing breaks. We say DON'T DO it, but--why would you, anyway? You need the small front ring ONLY for low gears, and the low gears are really the biggest three or four cogs in back--probably starting at at least 20t. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBeing a bike rider means being able to think, to sort things out, to make sense of logical stuff and simple math, to not be intimidated by a slightly different vocabulary than what you encounter in your daily life...and especially, by not being afraid to ask questions to clarify what is unclear to you. Melvin's what he named this chain tensioner. I looks like a derailer, but it doesn't shift. It just takes up chain slack (it's a chain tensioner), so it lets you ride a single-speed freewheel on a bike with vertical dropouts. Will has one of these on his bike.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e(Horizontal dropouts let you slide the rear wheel back and forth to tension the chain.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe beauty of using a tensioner is you aren't limited to just one gear. The Melvin wraps 20 teeth of chain, so you can have a single cog in back and even a 44\/34\/24 triple in front, although most people will use this with a double, probably a 40\/26 or 38\/24.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e20 tooth max rear cog\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSingle speed purists may turn their noses up at it, but if you have a rough and tumble bike  and you ride trails and road, having a tensioner and a double or triple in front is better. It still feels like a single speed; there's no noise, the chain doesn't bounce at all and it's still harder than having a geared bike, but you can climb to the top of the mountain with your geared buddies instead of relegating your one speed bike to city-duty only.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShimano makes a less expensive version, the Alfine tensioner. They both work great. Shimano won't notice if you buy theirs; Paul knows when you buy his, because we reorder. One more thing: You can adjust a rear derailer to stay in place and do the same.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDon't use this or the Shimano Alfine or any other chain tensioner on a fixed cog (no coasting). The wheel will lock up dangerously. Only on freewheels.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e TIP FROM WILL:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUse a front derailleur or just shift it with your keys when you're taking a break at the crest of the hill. Push the tensioner forward so the chain is slack while you finger-shift off the bike. Shifting down with your foot while riding is easier than you'd imagine. Foot shifting up is difficult but do-able, especially if you have long chainstays.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are plenty of cheaper tensioners out there that'll do the job, although I don't think there are many that wrap this much chain, but I suspect that people converting their bikes to two speeds would be more inclined to keep it that way if they use this gem of a tensioner made by Paul Components in Chico CA.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSet it up with the arm almost all the way extended when you're in the big cog in front so when you shift down it'll still be taut. Until we develop our own Silver front derailer this is the one to get. Use a 113 to 118mm BB. It's a 9 speed technically, but should work well with 7, 8 and 10 as well.
