Security means using a shoe with a sole the nubs can dig into. Rubbery is good, leather is bad, plastic is the worst. Softer beats harder, but we've used these with all kinds of sneakers and sandals, never had a problem.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Monarch is squarer than the King, and flatter top to bottom. It comes with eight set screws per side; King had zero. The set screws add grip, and are removable (if you fear them) with a 2.5mm allen. Leave them alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe length feels good beneath your shoe. The cup-and-cone (not cartridge) bearings get smoother with use, and in more than 25 years of selling MKS pedals, and 30+ years of riding them myself, I have never seen or heard of rough bearing on any MKS pedal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e If I had one bike, and I could get only one pair of pedal for it for the next 30 years, this is the pedal I’d get, no hesitation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e Our color selection is too vast and varies. My feet (Grant's) are on the wide side of normal, and I rode the 3D-printed plastic prototypes of these for a few months until I broke them. That's why these are aluminum. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's not so much that they're grippier, it's more like they feel even better under your foot. Plus, it's nice to know that no matter how bouncy the trail or how oblivious you are, can your foot migrate outward and off. It's called psychological security.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut mainly, they just add a little good feeling to an already really good-feeling pedal, and in that sense, they're good for roads, too. Tiny pedals just don't make sense. I wish all of my Monarch \u0026amp; Grip King pedals had these. I know I can arrange that, but there's a laziness factor, too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe black ones go nicely on black or silver Monarchs, and the silver ones do, too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLonger bolts (16mm) included. You'll need a 4mm hex wrench and a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the reflectors off. They just snap back into place when you're done. I cannot think of a better evening project. It'll take 15 minutes at a sloth's pace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne set is good for a left and a right pedal. They don't slow you down.
